HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS

This position leads the Communications Unit and brings together internal and external communications and brand to service SOS South Africa as well as external partners and media. The person is a member of the Senior Management Team, manages the Communications Unit, and provides expert advice and guidance in terms of communications strategy, change communications, external positioning and brand management and development – and operational support especially to the Senior Management Team. Overall, the Head of Communications creates and develops an environment for compelling and inspirational communications that motivate, inform and guide people – from co-workers to donors, from media to governments – and enables a stronger drive from the organisation on key strategic topics. The position reports directly to the National Director.

The position reports directly to the National Director.

General Aim of the Position:
• Contribute to the projection of SOS South Africa’s image and visibility for growth and sustainability,
• Support communication and brand management of the organization to maintain a consistent and good internal and public image.
Co-operation and Reporting Relationships:
• Reports directly to the National Director
• Receives additional technical support from Regional Brand and Communication Co-workers
• Works in close cooperation with FDU, Objective Leaders and Programme Directors
• Works with other co-workers, and board members
• Works with external and internal key stakeholders

Key performance areas:
• Develop an external communications strategy in alignment with the overall management strategy and positioning. Plan, monitor, evaluate and analyse the external communication activities
• Position SOS South Africa as a strong partner among potential and existing supporters based on the organization’s roots, vision, mission and values
• Provide communications expertise to the fundraising team and the program team


Priority tasks and responsibilities:

The Head of Communications will establish and develop the Communications Unit at SOS South Africa. They will then lead the entire communication planning, implementation and evaluation in the organization:

• Provide general management of all staff within the Communications Unit when it comes to development, performance, training, evaluations etc.
• Oversee and guide the development of (annual) communication plans linked to strategic initiatives
• Drive the development of the Unit budget, and monitor expenses together with the Finance Unit, following SOS financial and procurement policies
• Be an active member of the Senior Management Team and the National Management Team
• Support and cooperate with the main stakeholders including the Senior Management Team, and the FDU and Programs teams
• Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organisation (Issue Management)
• Guide the editorial strategy in support of brand positioning, advocacy, and external communications for fundraising purposes
• Work with the Senior Management Team and the ND to identify internal and external communications opportunities and risks, and define and execute appropriate strategies – this includes direct and operational support for all matters of Management Communications
• Evaluate the effectiveness of Communications and Brand efforts and agree on corrections as needed
• Lead crisis communications for incidents of a global nature potentially impacting the reputation of the organisation
• Lead and steer the development of the global brand to protect and ensure relevance and competitiveness
• Ensure quality of SOS South Africa communications materials, including the international website, social media platforms, annual report, and other publications
• Provide regular reports to the ND on progress


Professional Experience / Qualifications:

• Advanced Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field or undergraduate degree with substantial comparable experience combined with a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in communications including at senior level in international settings
• Broad experience in operational and strategic Communications and Brand and effective communication principles, concepts and good practices
• Experienced in leading and delivering major communication programs including multi- faceted communications strategies
• A sound understanding of a range of communication approaches and modern media platforms such as branding, visual communications, graphic design, electronic communications and social networking
• Strong leadership experience with multicultural teams combined with sound people management skills
• Charismatic personality with strong communication skills and result-oriented approach with outstanding skills in influencing, persuading and engaging staff and stakeholders
• Strong customer service mind-set combined with networking abilities, interpersonal skills and intercultural understanding
• Willingness to travel
• Excellent written and spoken English is essential. Fluency in other national languages of South Africa is an asset
• Applicants preferably South African citizens, or hold a valid South African work permit
