Nelspruit Village
Situated in the warm lowveld province of
Mpumalanga, the Nelspruit Village was the first to be built along
different lines - houses integrated into a suburb, to give the children
more of a sense of growing up in a natural community. There are 10
family homes and an SOS Kindergarten, as well as a very effective
Family Strengthening Programme.
Located in the Kamagugu suburb of Nelspruit, every effort was made to integrate the SOS Village into the community. The layout of the houses is similar to those of 'typical' Kamagugu homes. The first six children moved into their new homes in December 2003, and the Village now houses 75 children.
The SOS Kindergarten situated near to the family
houses, caters to the needs of the Kamagugu community. Two classrooms
capable of accommodating 25 children each, are complimented by a play
area.
The Family Strengthening Programme operates within the Tekwane community, and has formed a strong partnership with a community home-based care organisation. Through this partnership, many children benefit directly, as they receive much needed support, as well as the skills training and income generating training offered to caregivers and community volunteers.
